3. Minimize driving

With gas prices like they are, cut down your driving to an absolute minimum.  If you have some errands to run that are near your work, do them on your lunch break.  If the grocery store is one of several stops, bring a cooler to keep your cold stuff, well, cold.  Carpool if you can.

When you know that you will be in a part of town that you don't go to often, plan to make stops at other places near there in order to get it all done in one trip.

Some people can get away with one car.  We are not one of those people.  If you can swing it though, not only will you save on a car payment, maintenance, and gas, but you can also cut your car insurance by quite a bit.

Always factor the cost of gas into your plans.  It's great to go out and do fun things, but if you make a habit out of going, going, going, you are racking up unnecessary bills.  For instance, we have some amazing parks in a city about 30 minutes from our house.  The kids love them!  There's even a water park area of the playground.  But that trip costs a lot more than the "just-ok" parks around our house.  The kids still have fun at our local playgrounds, so we frequent them more often.  Even though both are free, when you keep gas in mind, there is a cost.
